Introduction
MAT is a national-level testing platform organized by the All India Management Association (AIMA). Conducted four times a year (February, May, September, and December), it is one of the most flexible exams in India, providing access to over 600 tier-2 and tier-3 business schools.
Exam Pattern
MAT offers candidates unique flexibility by letting them take the exam in three distinct modes: Paper-Based (PBT), Computer-Based (CBT), or Remote Proctored Internet-Based Test (IBT).
- Total Questions: 150 MCQs
- Duration: 120 minutes (2 hours)
- Sectional Time Limits: No (though AIMA recommends explicit timelines per section).
- Marking Scheme: +1 for correct answers; -0.25 for incorrect answers

Syllabus
- Language Comprehension: Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Synonyms, Antonyms, Sentence Equivalence, Jumbled Paragraphs.
- Mathematical Skills: Comprehensive Arithmetic, Basic Number Systems, Equations, Mensuration.
- Data Analysis & Sufficiency: Data Tables, Pie Charts, Bar Charts, Line Graphs, Venn Diagrams, Data Sufficiency statements.
- Intelligence & Critical Reasoning: Puzzles, Coding/Decoding, Direction Sense, Visual Arrangements, Critical Assumptions.
- Indian & Global Environment: Current affairs, awards, corporate structures, sports events, economic updates, political developments.
Eligibility Criteria
- Academic Qualification: Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university.
- Minimum Marks: Just a pass profile in graduation (no specific minimum percentage restriction from AIMA).
- Final Year Students: Eligible to register and sit for the exam.
- Age Limit: No age constraints or attempts ceilings.
Selection Process
- Score Transmission: During registration, MAT allows you to select 5 B-schools for free. AIMA sends your scores directly to those campuses.
- Composite Score Ranking: B-schools shortlist candidates based on the composite score scaled out of 800 (calculated from the first 4 sections).
- College Level Evaluation: Independent validation via local GD/PI or written essay rounds conducted directly by the recipient institute.
How to Apply
- Visit the official AIMA registration link (mat.aima.in).
- Select your preferred test mode (PBT, CBT, or IBT). Candidates can pay extra to take a combination of tests (e.g., CBT + IBT).
- Fill in standard personal details and upload images.
- Choose the 5 preferred management institutes where you want your scores sent automatically.
- Pay the application fee (approx. ₹2,100 for a single test mode).
MAT Target Colleges
MAT is highly accessible and accepted by more than 600 tier-2 and tier-3 regional business schools. It is generally not accepted by top-tier institutes like IIMs, XLRI, or JBIMS.
