Introduction

CMAT is a national-level entrance exam conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is a highly respected, heavily taken exam providing access to more than 1,000 AICTE-approved institutions across India, including JBIMS, Great Lakes, SIMSREE, and K.J. Somaiya.

Exam Pattern

CMAT is characterized by an incredibly relaxed time allocation, offering 1.8 minutes per question.

  • Total Questions: 100 MCQs
  • Duration: 180 minutes (3 hours)
  • Sectional Time Limits: No
  • Marking Scheme: +4 for correct answers; -1 for incorrect answers
  • Sectional Breakup (5 Sections – 20 Questions each):
    • Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation
    • Logical Reasoning
    • Language Comprehension
    • General Awareness
    • Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Syllabus

  • Quantitative & DI: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Modern Math, Data Interpretation tables, charts, graphs.
  • Logical Reasoning: Linear/Matrix Arrangements, Syllogisms, Number/Letter series, Coding, Blood Relations, Analogy.
  • Language Comprehension: Long RC passages, Sentence Correction, Vocabulary, Synonyms/Antonyms, Idioms.
  • General Awareness: Current Affairs (National & International), Static GK (History, Constitution, Geography, Economics, Science).
  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Concepts of startups, venture funding, business terms, ecosystem stakeholders, traits of entrepreneurs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum Marks: Passing marks in graduation (Individual institutes using CMAT scores generally mandate a 50% cutoff for general seats).
  • Final Year Students: Fully eligible to apply.
  • Citizenship: Candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • Age Limit: No upper age limit.

Selection Process

  1. NTA Rank List: NTA releases national ranking and overall percentiles.
  2. Institutional Application: CMAT does not have unified counseling. You must apply directly to each target college using your CMAT score.
  3. Screening Rounds: Individual B-schools run their own GD, Group Tasks, and Personal Interview process.

How to Apply

  1. Go to the official NTA CMAT portal (cmat.nta.nic.in).
  2. Register online using an email ID and mobile number to generate login credentials.
  3. Fill in the application form and note down the system-generated Application Number.
  4. Upload scanned legible images of a recent photo, signature, and category certificate (if applicable).
  5. Pay the application fee (approx. ₹2,000 for General males; discounts apply for females/reserved categories) online.

CMAT is an AICTE-approved, national-level exam accepted by over 1,000 public and private business schools across India.

  • Tier 1 (Top Government & Autonomus Hubs):
    • JBIMS (Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies) – Mumbai (Accepts CMAT for its All-India Quota seats)
    • SIMSREE (Sydenham Institute of Management Studies) – Mumbai
    • Great Lakes Institute of Management – Chennai / Gurgaon (Accepts CMAT alongside CAT/XAT)
  • Tier 2 Options:
    • K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management – Mumbai
    • GIM (Goa Institute of Management) – Goa
    • PUMBA (Department of Management Sciences, Pune University) – Pune
    • BIMTECH (Birla Institute of Management Technology) – Greater Noida
    • XIME (Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship) – Bengaluru
