Introduction

The SEBI Grade A Examination is conducted by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to recruit Officer Grade A (Assistant Manager) across multiple streams, including General, Legal, Information Technology, Research, Engineering, Official Language, and others. It is one of India’s most prestigious regulatory body examinations, offering candidates an opportunity to work in securities market regulation, investor protection, policy formulation, market surveillance, investigations, and financial market development.

Exam Pattern

The SEBI Grade A recruitment process consists of three stages: Phase I (Preliminary Examination), Phase II (Main Examination), and Interview.

Phase I – Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is conducted online and consists of two papers.

Paper 1 is common for all streams and assesses candidates on:

  • English Language
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Reasoning Ability
  • General Awareness

Paper 2 is stream-specific and evaluates candidates’ professional knowledge related to their chosen discipline.

Both papers are objective in nature. Candidates must qualify both sectional and overall cut-offs to be shortlisted for the Main Examination. There is a negative marking of one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to the question for every incorrect answer in objective papers.

Phase II – Main Examination

The Main Examination also consists of two papers.

Paper 1 is an English Descriptive paper that evaluates writing skills through Essay Writing, Precis Writing, and Reading Comprehension.

Paper 2 is stream-specific and tests candidates’ in-depth professional knowledge in their respective discipline. Depending on the stream, the paper may contain objective as well as descriptive questions.

Interview

Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Interview. The interview assesses communication skills, subject knowledge, analytical ability, personality, and overall suitability for the role of a SEBI Officer. The final merit list is prepared based on the combined performance in Phase II and the Interview.

Selection Process

The SEBI Grade A selection process comprises the following stages:

  • Phase I (Preliminary Examination): Screening test for shortlisting candidates.
  • Phase II (Main Examination): Determines eligibility for the Interview.
  • Interview: Final stage of the recruitment process.

The final selection is based on candidates’ performance in Phase II and the Interview. Phase I is qualifying in nature and is used for screening purposes.
