The UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam is a prominent national-level entrance test conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It recruits unmarried graduate candidates into the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers. Successful applicants join the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), or the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA).

  • Question Format: Objective Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) only.
  • Language: Bilingual (English & Hindi), except for the English language paper.
  • Negative Marking: A penalty of 1/3rd (0.33) marks is deducted for every incorrect response. No marks are deducted for unattempted questions. 

Online Examination

  • Clarification: The CDS Exam is strictly an offline, pen-and-paper examination.
  • Process: Candidates must attend designated exam centers and mark their answers manually using an OMR answer sheet. No online computer-based version of this exam exists.

Selection Process

The complete selection framework contains four distinct stages:

  1. Written Exam: The preliminary offline screening test based on the designated syllabus topics.
  2. SSB Interview (5 Days): An extensive personality, intelligence, and psychological testing process conducted by the Services Selection Board.
  • Stage I: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) and Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT).
  • Stage II: Psychology tests, Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, and a personal interview.
  1. Document Verification: Verification of educational eligibility records and identity proof certificates.
  2. Medical Examination: A comprehensive physical and medical checkup by Service Medical Officers.

Syllabus

The syllabus is broadly categorized into three core subjects: 

  • English: Tests foundational grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, synonyms/antonyms, spotting errors, jumbled sentences, and sentence construction rules.
  • General Knowledge: Focuses heavily on current affairs (national/international), Indian history, physical and political geography, Indian constitution/polity, basic economics, general sciences, and defence news.
  • Elementary Mathematics: Features high school level (Matriculation standard) algebra, arithmetic/number theory, trigonometry, geometry, mensuration (areas/volumes), and basic statistics.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must satisfy distinct requirements to qualify for the recruitment drive:

  • Age and Gender Profiles:
    • IMA: 19–24 years (Male only).
    • INA: 19–22 years (Male only).
    • AFA: 19–23 years (Male only).
    • OTA: 19–25 years (Male and Female).
  • Educational background:
    • IMA & OTA: A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
    • INA: A degree in Engineering.

AFA: A Bachelor’s degree with mandatory Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level, or a Bachelor of Engineering.

How to Apply

UPSC manages the registration through its unified digital application portal:

  1. Navigate to the official UPSC Application Portal.
  2. Complete your One Time Registration (OTR) if you have never applied for a UPSC exam before.
  3. Log in using your OTR details, find the active CDS Application link, and choose your preferred service academies in order of priority.
  4. Upload clear scans of your photograph, signature, and an official government photo identity card.
  5. Pay the required application fee (exempted for female, SC, and ST candidates) and select your chosen physical exam center
